Why Humidity Ruins Your Style
Humidity puts moisture back into the hair. When hair absorbs that moisture, it expands. As the hair swells, smooth styles lose polish, curls lose structure, & frizz begins to form. The best way to prevent frizz, is to build the right foundation before you ever curl or flat iron the hair. 5 Step Style Guide Styling is both a science and an art. Practice improves skill, but you follow these five steps, you're already ahead of the game. 1. Foundation
Start with the right foundation of products on wet hair, after washing. For curls: • Mousse adds grip and hold • Heat protectant shields the hair For sleek styles: • Heat protectant • Lightweight smoothing product *Hair that is overly soft from heavy conditioning or weighed down from buildup (being too dirty) will struggle to hold style. 2. Pre-Style
A proper blow-dry determines how long your style lasts. For Curls & Sleek Styles: • Use firm, controlled tension on even sized sections, with a round brush • Direct airflow downward using a nozzle on your blowdryer • Moderate heat and shooting with cool air can help to polish and lock in smoothness *If the hair isn’t smooth at this stage, curling won’t fix it. 3. Proper Techniques
Proper techniques are what locks in the style. For curls: • Use a 1”–1.25” barrel (the larger the barrel, the looser and larger the curls will be, tighter curls will have a longer lasting effect) • Keep sections no wider than the size of the barrel for even heat distribution • Pass the curling iron one time, from roots to ends, to help pre-heat the strands and smooth flyaways •Allow full cooling before brushing (also known as setting the curls) For sleek styles: • Use 1" flat iron to get close to the root • Keep even sized sections no wider than the size of the iron for precision straightening •For a softer look, bevel the end of the hair in and *If sections are too large, heat won’t distribute evenly and the curl will drop faster. Curls are "set" in the position they are cooled down in, if they do not set properly and completely cool down before being touched, they will not remain curly or wavy 4. Root smoothing
Flat ironing can create a smoother base before styling. • Use 1" flat iron to get close to the root • Keep even sized sections no wider than the size of the iron for precision straightening • Only flatten 1-2" of the root if you're planning to curl *Flat ironing the entire strand before curling will make the hair more difficult to curl later 5. Post-STYLE
Let curls cool completely before touching them. Cooling is what sets the shape. Finish with: • Flexible hold spray • Light drop of humidity-resistant serum to help add shine *Layering protection works better than one heavy product. Trouble shooting
If your style falls quickly, check: • Too much weight (very long hair or no internal layers) • Sections too large for your barrel or not pre-heating the section • Brushing before curls fully cool If your hair frizzes quickly, check: • Too little tension during blow-dry • Dirty hair or too much product in the hair Optional: A keratin treatment can help reduce frizz temporarily by making the hair less porous and more resistant to humidity, we recommend the keratin at Roxana Elena Hair because it is gentle yet effective, with our keratin, you will still be able to add curls with the curling iron. *Adding layers to the hair can help remove excess weight and improve curl movement. recommended products
